DEVONthink 2.9.17 Updates Web Interface and More

With the maintenance update to version 2.9.17 we’ve made the web interface of DEVONthink Pro Office compatible to current web browsers. Access your databases again from any Mac or Windows PC running Safari, Chrome, Firefox, or Edge! Using DEVONthink with OmniFocus

In December we laid out how you can use DEVONthink To Go and OmniFocus together with universal item links. On the Mac this works, too, of course, and in a very similar fashion.

Recap: Item links are universal URLs that point to a document or group stored in DEVONthink or DEVONthink To Go. An item link that works on one device will also work on other devices as long as the database that the link is pointing to is available. (more)

Quitting Evernote for DEVONthink

Information worker Yann Rousse switched from Evernote to DEVONthink. He described how he managed the transition in detail in an excellent blog post on Medium:

Moving to DEVONthink from Evernote is not a trivial change. The new tools available to handle my Information and Knowledge activities are quite different and in many ways, far more powerful. The learning curve has started for me but I feel DEVONthink is not only excellent but most importantly the proper fit for me. I’m just beginning to perceive how I can now extend my use of such tool as most barriers I had with Evernote have been lifted now. (more)

As an extra bonus, the VCard and linked contacts have active links in them. Hover over the word home before someone’s phone number and you’ll see it change. Click it and you’ll see options to call or send a message. (more)

DEVONthink does not have a system for automatically backing up everything. DEVONthink has a setting in its Preferences > Backup that controls how many internal metadata backups are done. These backups can be used in a troubleshooting situation by selecting Tools > Restore Backup. (more)

Two For One Windows

Support tickets sometimes present new ideas. And sometimes they rekindle old ones from the back burner. I recently had a ticket from someone who wanted to open a document in two windows at once. So, about half an hour later, another custom AppleScript script was finished — one that would open the same document in two windows, placed side by side on the screen. (more)
