Welcome to Indiana, Bill

Bill DeVille, our head supporter and true evangelist for the DEVONbelief, has moved from warm and wet Louisiana to colder Indiana. Right after his 75th birthday, Bill has bought this wonderful Log Cabin in the woods of Indiana, which was first built in 1901, then in 1932, and finally in 1974. So, parts of the cabin are more than 100 years old. Today, the log cabin is up-to-date with central heating, air conditioning, good insulation as well as modern windows. (mehr)

Another Update: DEVONthink Pro (Office) 1.3.2

The second season update this summer is DEVONthink Pro (Office). It adds minor improvements to almost all areas of DEVONthink Pro and Pro Office. DEVONthink Professional Office 1.3.2 supports MailTags 2.0 notes, allows to set the resolution and the compression of PDFs, and connects to ExactCode’s ExactScan software. Both editions allow you to set the background color of rich text documents, support grouping of found documents directly from within Classify and See Also drawers, and read Finder and Spotlight comments when sync’ing an indexed folder. The Dashboard widgets look way more attractive now, too.

Workspaces and more: DEVONagent 2.2 is out

In the old tradition of season updates, here’s the first Summer Update, this time for DEVONagent. Version 2.2 adds, among many other improvements, new features that can come in handy when working with many web pages at the same time or with Bonjour-advertised web services as DEVONthink Pro Office web sharing. Also check our the heavily updated scanners that way more reliably detect thumbnail galleries, images, documents, whatever they’re looking for.

Getting Spreadsheet Data In and Out

If you need to get table-like data into DEVONthink Pro or out of it, nothing easier than that. From, e.g., Microsoft Excel or OpenOffice export your data as tab-separated or comma-separated values (.tsv, .csv). Import this into DEVONthink Pro and it will automagically appear as a sheet. To get a sheet out of DEVONthink, select it (not the individual records) and choose File > Export > As Files and Folders. It will get exported as tab-separated values that can be read by all spreadsheet applications on any platform.

Use the Right Search Set for the Job

DEVONagent allows you to search not just using Google, but with many more specialized search engines. For serious web research, you should use this possibility. Choose the search set that best suits your needs instead of just using the default ‘Internet (Fast Scan).’ To choose another search set (a parameter set for the next search run), select it from the little magnifying glass pop-up in the search field. No Tour de France in German TV

May be you have heard about it: ARD and ZDF, the two public TV stations in Germany, Europe, have halted their coverage of the Tour de France after T-Mobile rider Patrik Sinkewitz had been tested positive for doping. Yeah! Everyone feels that all riders are doping. It’s just the dexterity of their doctors that keeps them from being tested positive. And if this practise doesn’t stop, well, then simply stop covering them in the news instead. This is where it hurts them hardest. With all thes doping scandals, the Tour de France was no real fun to watch anyway.

Survive the Heat

If you are suffering the heat as much as we do here in Europe at the moment, here’s my favourite summer drink that helps you survive the afternoon: Lassi or Ayran. All you need is yoghurt, water, sugar or salt, and some ice. Get the yoghurt from your Turkish dealer, Turkish yoghurt is a bit sour. But some lemon juice also does the job. Fill your glass between 30 and 50 percent with yoghurt, then fill up with water. Add sugar (Lassi) or salt (Ayran), and ice cubes to make it really cold. Enjoy!

Walking on the 49th

A few weeks a go we were walking through the pedestrian zone of Besigheim, another small town now far away, to a nice German restaurant. By accident, I discovered that the 49th latitude runs straight through the ped zone. While I am not into geo-what-o-ever, I couldn’t resist to at least take a photo :-) … (mehr)

Converting Files

If you receive a file that you cannot open because you don’t have the right piece of software at hand, or if you want to convert a file in a proprietary format for importing into DEVONthink, have a look at Zamzar, a free Web-based file conversion service that converts diverse document, image, audio, and video formats.
