The Next Generation of Our AI is Here

We have been hard at work these past few years. Not only on DEVONthink To Go 2 and our new sync technology but also a new generation of our AI engine. Meet Awareness.

Before our applications used only the documents, their metadata, and information derived from the way you filed them. Awareness goes much further. It tracks which applications you are using, what actions you perform, and where. Then it creates groups and files items as you work and when you return to, e.g., DEVONthink you’ll find hierarchies, tags, and connections already made for you and ready to use. DEVONthink 2.9.11: New Declutter Web Service and More

Two weeks ago Instapaper silently made their public API available only to logged-in users. If you are one of the DEVONthink users whose workflow relied on Instapaper here’s the fix release for you. DEVONthink 2.9.11 now uses our own Markdownifier web service for decluttering clipped web pages and articles and so removes the dependency on a third-party service. (mehr)

Good-Bye, Bill

Last Saturday our oldest employee and close friend, William B. DeVille, died at the age of 85.

Bill joined our company in 2005 at the age of 73, applying with the words “We have a very long lifespan in my family”. In uncountable forum posts and support tickets he helped our customers getting started with our products and find creative solutions for their problems. (mehr)

Sync Faster on Your Network

When it comes to synchronizing on any network connection, the quality and strength of your network matters — and is often not as good as you imagine. Can you hit the maximum advertised speed? Yes, but probably not sustained over the hours and hours you use it. Wireless networks are convenient, but they’re also subject to poor signal strength, noise, and other factors that can limit your sync reliablility. (mehr)

DEVONthink To Go 2.1.2: Sharing, Markdown, and More

DEVONthink is all about document management and workflow. Version 2.1 brought the document provider extension, now DEVONthink To Go 2.1.2 lets you share multiple documents in one go with other apps, e.g., for sending them by email. Markdown and HTML documents can now link to images and other items simply by local paths as an alternative to using item links. Markdown is becoming increasingly popular as an easy-to-learn file format for text requiring only simple formatting. (mehr)

When the Web Breaks

If you weren’t aware of it already, there was a problem on the internet yesterday for a couple of hours. A little problem in terms of describing it: Amazon Web Services (AWS) was “having problems”. However, it was really a big problem for any app or service relying on the S3 services. One of those services was us. Our downloads were unavailable for a period of time. Slack, Trello, Time Inc., and others were affected. Some even experienced some home automation problems because they relied on the IFFFT website. (mehr)

Add Hotkeys to Open With Items

Last week, we talked about editing options in DEVONthink: What happens when you double-click a file (and why) as well as the hotkey to open a file in the system default application. But there are also times when you want to open a document in an application other than the system default. (mehr)

Editing Options in DEVONthink

In DEVONthink, if a type of file can be edited in DEVONthink, it will open in a DEVONthink document window when the file is double-clicked. This makes it easy to isolate a document for editing while allowing you to keep your place in the other window. It also allows you to keep working directly in DEVONthink without having to jump back and forth between applications. (mehr)

DEVONthink To Go 2.1.1 with Important Bug Fix

DEVONthink To Go 2.1.1 just passed Apple’s review with important bug fixes. — For the new document provider extension feature to work, DEVONthink To Go 2.1 had to move the the database files to a new location shared between application and its extensions. On some devices this failed and resulted in an error message and an apparently empty database. Version 2.1.1 fixes this issue and makes the database accessible again. We apologize for the inconveniences. (mehr)
